Source: Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass. Sept. 06--PLYMOUTH -- Two weeks after an electrical malfunction caused the shutdown of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station's reactor, the plant is still not at full power.Representatives from Entergy, which owns and operates the plant, initially attributed the delayed return to standard procedure. Shutdowns provide opportunities to address items on a reactor's "to do" list, they said. But federal nuclear energy officials confirmed Tuesday a failed motor in one of three massive pumps that supply water to the reactor was keeping the plant from operating at peak. The burned out motor, within days of the wiring problem, had nuclear watchdogs talking.Diane Turco, a Harwich resident and founder of the Cape Downwinders, compared the 41-year-old plant to an old Volkswagen Beetle. "You keep repairing it bit by bit until the front wheels fall off," Turco said. "This is a far too serious situation to keep having problems. They need to close the reactor."Mary Lampert, founder of Pilgrim Watch, called the two plant problems "an example of one thing after another.""It's indicative they're not spending the money to make sure the equipment is in operable condition," Lampert said. A replacement motor was in stock at the plant, but it had last been refurbished in about 2007. Plant officials decided to send it out for an inspection before installing it.The motor was checked and is now awaiting installation."It's fair to say any power plant has operational conditions that need to be managed, and we're doing a good job of responding and getting the plant back to full power," said James Sinclair, spokesman for Entergy.Lampert said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission should be demanding better performance from Pilgrim. "The NRC 迷你倉新蒲崗oesn't seem capable of developing a backbone and making sure they're doing what they should be doing," Lampert said.NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said feed-water pumps are a production issue, not a safety issue. They provide water for the nuclear reaction process. "Still we are certainly going to monitor the work," Sheehan said of the motor installation. On Aug. 22, a breaker had tripped due to a faulty electric cable in the junction box, causing the three large feed-water pumps to shut down. Workers immediately halted the nuclear reaction process.Pilgrim was at zero power from Aug. 23 to 25, then very slowly powered up over the next three days to 20 percent. On Aug. 29, power reached 74 percent and now hovers at about 76 percent. While the lower production rate would seemingly result in lost revenue, Sinclair said Entergy does not comment on production-related issues for business reasons. In its mid-year performance review released Wednesday, the NRC appeared satisfied with the Plymouth plant. "Pilgrim operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and met all cornerstone objectives," the review letter said. The NRC will continue to oversee Pilgrim at the level used for plants that meet performance standards.Sheehan said the August shutdown, the plant's fifth unplanned shutdown in the last 15 months, wasn't factored into the mid-year review, but will be considered as part of the NRC's third quarter report later this fall."We are still evaluating whether there will be any changes in oversight due to the number of unplanned shutdowns," Sheehan wrote in an email.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, Mass.)

Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch, Va. Sept. 06--A .40-caliber shell casing found Monday along a trail in the Deer Meadow section of Brandermill has been sent to the state lab as part of an on-going investigation into the July 4 death of a Chesterfield boy struck by a stray bullet.Investigators say the bullet that struck 7-year-old Brendon Mackey in the head was fired from a .40-caliber-style pistol, but no match has been made of shell casing and the round that struck the boy.Authorities likely would need to obtain the firearm that was randomly fired in Brendon's death and forensically compare it to the shell casing to determine if they matched."It's another lead to follow," said Chesterfield police Capt. Chris Hensley.Hensley said residents walking along a walking trail in Deer Meadow retrieved the casing and called police. The casing was discovered outside the area canvassed by police and beyond the maximum distance that authorities estimate the fatal bullet could have traveled from the spot where Brendon迷你倉was fatally struck as he walked to The Boathouse at Sunday Park on the Swift Creek Reservoir. Two .380-caliber shells also were recovered in the area, Hensley said, but they don't match the suspected caliber of the shooter's gun.Hensley said police have obtained another .40-caliber style gun from an area resident -- one of seven that have been sent to the state lab for forensic testing. Two of those weapons have been ruled out definitively.------Reward fund at BB&T BankMeanwhile, a reward fund set up to generate tips in the case now totals $2,350, Hensley said. Source: The Sun, Yuma, Ariz. Sept. 06--The biggest thing people get wrong about meth is that it's impossible to beat. That's the message one recovery expert says he would like to be heard by every addict in search of what they need most -- hope.Anthony Alberta, PhD., says he'd also like to get this message across to non-addicts who repeat what he says is the often-heard statement that meth addiction is a death sentence with little hope for recovery."Meth addiction is treatable. There is no doubt about that. Meth is just as treatable as any other drug out there," said Alberta, program director with The Living Center in Yuma. "Fifty percent of people who complete treatment successfully recover. That means they are abstinent from use for about two years. That is comparable with other drugs across the board."Alberta doesn't dispute the ugliness of meth addiction or its grip over addicts. He sees a problem with popular culture adding sensational fire to fact, creating a mythology about meth that can discourage addicts to seek help."If we promote the idea that meth addiction is not treatable, then it becomes in fact untreatable. The perfection becomes the reality," he said. "I think if a person believes there is no hope, no possibility of recovery, they make totally different decisions than if they believed recovery is possible."What meth addicts need, he says, is to enroll in a clinically proven program, specifically one offering cognitive behavioral therapy. But Alberta does point to some unique aspects about meth addiction that make it different from other drugs, but not necessarily worse. Addicts, for example, often experience clinical depression during recovery, an obstacle that can derail recovery if the addict and therapist aren't prepared for this phenomena ahead of time."That depression becomes a whole other treatment issue that can affect the outcome of the drug treatment itself," he said. "There are physiological reasons involving longtime impact on the brain that can lead to clinical depression."He also warned that recovery programs more geared toward dealing with alcohol have a poor track record in helping people who are addicted to meth. He explained that the problem is such programs' reliance on members or clients go迷你倉ng back and relating stories of their time as addicts."One thing that has been demonstrated is that having (meth addicts) recount their experience while using drugs actually tends to drive relapse, increasing cravings," Alberta said, adding that recovery isn't simply recovery. "Generally speaking, meth and cocaine addiction are different from other drugs, drugs that depress the nervous system."He added that meth addicts do face a special challenge that may present post-rehabilitation challenges. He noted that a key to successful recovery upon leaving a program is an addict being able to return to a life that offers resources and support ranging from friends and family to a job and home. Many meth addicts have often lost many of these resources."People that enter into treatment and come out and have lost their job and lost their home and lost their family, they step out there totally alone and they have much fewer resources to support them in recovery," Alberta said.He explained that a legal response to drug addiction often hurts addicts more than helping them, a response not evenly applied to all addictions. He gave alcohol addiction as an example."It's okay to go out and get drunk every night. That's legal in our society. But meth is illegal from top to bottom, so people tend to get involved in the criminal justice system and lose all ties to their resources by virtue of their involvement in the criminal justice system," Alberta said. "The Living Center administrator sees a major problem with society and government seeing drug addiction as anything other than a healthcare issue."We still view drug addiction primarily as a moral and legal problem. I don't view recovery in any form as magical or spiritual or wonderful. I see recovery from addiction as a rational response to a healthcare issue," he said. "Nobody goes to the doctor because they have gout and we say, 'Oh that's wonderful that you have recovered from gout!' They probably have done very similar things to improve their health. Again, addiction is a healthcare issue."Darin Fenger can be reached at dfenger@yumasun.com or 539-6860.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Sun (Yuma, Ariz.) Source: Journal Star, Peoria, Ill. Sept. 06--PEORIA -- How many local soccer moms want a few stiff pops in the late afternoon?Apparently, plenty. That's what we can glean from impending enterprise called Emma's Eatery. The Peoria operation -- one is destined for Pekin, too -- is to occupy a freestanding building in the parking lot of Sterling Bazaar shopping center, 3311 N. Sterling Ave., between an oil-change business and a car wash. The unique business plan first was aired in June, when the Peoria Liquor Commission heard a pitch by Mike Thiessen, partner with the Oakbrook Terrace-based Blackhawk Restaurant Group. He came back in town Tuesday to discuss minor details with the commission, which has granted him a six-month beer-and-wine license.Alcohol isn't the main lure at Emma's. The plan is to foster a relaxed, responsible atmosphere, he says."We don't want to encourage drinkers," Thiessen says. "It's not a bar. There are no bar stools."Rather, the decor -- once the Sterling site is remodeled -- is akin to an upscale coffee house, like an urban art studio. That's according to the pictures he showed me, but he didn't want to put them in this newspaper."I don't want the competition to see them," he says.Anyway, Emma's plans to specialize in salads, sandwiches and soups. Wine and beer will be limited to three per guest, and the staff will be counting. That's a big reason why Emma's doesn't plan to seek a license to allow hard liquor, Thiessen says. If a guest were to order, say, an alcohol-heavy Long Island Iced Tea, then staffers would have a hard time discerning who might be getting ripped.Plus, there are no TV sets, thus no sports."It's the opposite of a bar," Thiessen tells me. "You and I might go to a bar to watch the Blackhawks or Bears. But a wife or girlfriend probably doesn't want to. It (Emma's) is anti-testosterone."Add up the whole package, and Emma's is aiming toward female customers. It's especially geared toward mothers who want to take a break between kids and husbands, mostly 4 to 6 p.m.As Thiessen told this paper in June, "They drop the kids off, swing into Kroger, pick up something for dinner, and they've got 45 (free) minutes. They can come in and have a glass of wine. A gaggle of women can come in and have a couple of drinks."If they linger for a long time, Emma's could relax the three-beverage limit, Thiessen tells me. The rule isn't hard and fast."If you hang out for five hours, you 迷你倉an have another drink," Thiessen says.Five hours? That's a long time, even for women. If shoe-shopping were involved somehow, five hours would be no problem. But five hours of pure gabbing can trigger tongue cramps in even the gabbiest chatters. Plus, after that much time, their cellphones might start blowing up, besieged by pesky husbands and kids wondering about the whereabouts of dinner.I'm a business-school dropout. So I can't judge Emma's prospects of success. Still, the motif -- you could alternately call the place "Sips & Suds for Soccer Moms" -- is like nothing I'd ever heard of.But Thiessen says the setup has worked elsewhere. He points to several eateries that his group runs in Oregon: Doozy's, Jasper's Deli and Richard's Deli.Food isn't their lone draw. News reports categorize those ventures as part of the state's many "video lottery delis" -- businesses that sell food but mostly focus on the lucrative video-gaming market. And, indeed, there's been no secret that Emma's will offer video gaming. If someone is going to hang out for five hours there, slots and poker would explain the reason.Gaming is popular in many spots in and around Peoria. Some joints see thousands of dollars jammed into their machines every day. One pub just outside Peoria saw nearly $100,000 gambled in July; during that same month, a Peoria enterprise hosted more than $126,000 in wagering. All told in July, more than $326,000 was played on county machines, while $775,000 was gambled on city machines.Amid that kind of get-rich environment, gaming machines look to be a focal point at both Emma's outlets. (A third location, at 1133 W. Glen Ave., triggered neighbors' concerns about parking, traffic and fights. So, Thiessen recently killed off that site). He says the Pekin location looks to be up and running soon, while the remodeled Sterling site can be operational in about three months. That would mean a grand opening right at the height of the hectic Christmas-shopping season. What luck, eh? Those busy soccer moms might need a break. Ho-ho-ho, pour a Chablis and watch those one-arm bandits spin.PHIL LUCIANO is a Journal Star columnist. Source: The Palm Beach Post, Fla.儲存Sept. 06--GAINESVILLE -- Trey Burton is finally settling in at one position.OK, maybe two. After three years of bouncing him around at fullback, running back, quarterback, tight end, receiver and on special teams, No. 12 Florida has streamlined Burton's role for his senior season. While the Gators retained a package of plays featuring him as a Wildcat quarterback, his main job is to be a trustworthy slot receiver for quarterback Jeff Driskel. He could be the guy Driskel looks for on third down when the pocket is collapsing. Now that they are in their third year together, their familiarity could make Burton the most consistent option in UF's passing attack."He knows where to get in the zones or when it's man, whether to pull out of routes, stuff like that," Driskel said. "He's been a reliable guy ever since he's been here, so he's definitely going to get a lot of touches this year."Heading into Saturday's game between the Gators and Miami at Sun Life Stadium (noon, ESPN), Burton likely is one of the UM defense's main concerns. He led UF with five catches for a career-high 69 yards against Toledo last week.Among returning players, he was second on the team in receiving last year with 18 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown. He does not have all-world speed, but is fast enough to break away if he gets in the open field and is tough to bring down at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds. In three-plus seasons at Florida, Burton has averaged 32.4 total yards per game and scored 19 touchdowns. As a true freshman in 2010, he set the program record for touchdowns in a game with six against Kentucky. While he never duplicated that stunning game, he has delivered other dynamic performances. Later that year, he rushe新蒲崗迷你倉 for 110 yards and scored two touchdowns to beat Georgia. He hammered Tennessee with 38 rushing yards, 91 receiving yards and two touchdowns last season.During his career, the Gators have had two head coaches and three offensive coordinators, but he keeps finding work. Steve Addazio, Charlie Weis and Brent Pease -- three coordinators with distinct ideas -- all found use for him."It's just staying positive and open and not saying, 'I want to do just this or just that,' and things like that," Burton said. "Being accepting to whatever they want you to do."That even extended to a conversation about moving to safety, which coach Will Muschamp considered in 2011. Muschamp believed Burton could be an asset in the secondary, and Burton was eager to give it a shot, but the Gators ultimately decided he was more valuable in the offense. The coaches credit Burton as an extension of the staff, knowing where every player should be on every snap. His savvy was particularly helpful in his freshman year, when former coach Urban Meyer frequently cycled three quarterbacks -- Burton, Jordan Reed and John Brantley -- on one possession. Burton often helped Reed and other players get lined up correctly. His thorough grasp of the offense also gives him the ability to make quick fixes when he notices something is amiss."When somebody messes up, he lines up at a tight end spot when that's not even his position just to cover it up and make sure we've got the right formation to make the play work," Pease said. "I mean, he's that smart. He sees the whole picture."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Palm Beach Post (West Palm Beach, Fla.)
