Source: The Montana Standard, ButteNov.迷你倉 15--Both Class B squads play loser out matches today in BozemanBOZEMAN -- Two teams, long removed from state volleyball finals play appeared in Bozeman Thursday and acquitted themselves quite nicely, thank you.For the Wardens of Deer Lodge, a five-year absence from the Class B state finals showed itself in spurts, but not enough to prove they weren't worthy of being a member of the final weekend of play, before falling 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 21-21, 25-23) to Forysth. As for the Jefferson Panthers out of Boulder, more than a generation has passed -- 22 years -- since the program qualified for the state tournament and they would not back down to one of the co-favorites, Florence-Carlton, before falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 26-24).Both squads now have to go the tougher way to tournament hardware, as they will have to sneak through the losers' draw to capture state glory in this double elimination tournament.Deer Lodge plays Fairfield at noon Friday in a loser out match and Boulder will go up against Choteau at 10 a.m. in another win or go home encounter.Wardens fall in four tough setsDespite the loss, Deer Lodge players left the court feeling positive about their performance overall."I think we represented well. We just need to keep coming at them, because we have a chance at the state tournament," Deer Lodge's Michele Christnacht said. "We have to show everyone that. We have a bunch of seniors with a lot of heart and we have always been hard workers. We are here to get stuff done and show that we can compete in every sport. Forysth were good hitters, they got up, and hit it where they wanted to. Sometimes we got to it, sometimes we didn't."If Deer Lodge had jitters it wasn't apparent early on as Dani Walker swung away and the back row dug ditches as they cleaned up most of the Forsyth hits for early 6-3 and 9-5 leads.Their lead blossomed to 11-5 as Walker tricked the other side with a cheeky dump kill, forcing Forsyth into an early timeout.Shayla Therriault then blocked a tight ball at the net to keep Deer Lodge up 13-8.Forsyth is no pushover. They proved that quickly, rallying to tie things at 17-all.The run continued as the Dogies began to close the block better and find better parts of the floor in the attack and moved out to a 22-19 edge.Three competitive rallies later the Wardens would be down 1-0, dropping a 25-19 result in the set.Forsyth rode the wave of the first set win and crashed on the Wardens who fell behind 15-7 in the second set. However some big serves by Hunter Therriault and better net play helped Deer lodge creep back within 15-11.Forsyth used some big hitting by Christnacht and would push their edge back up to 19-12 and Jones called timeout. It didn't stop the bleeding as Forsyth's efficiency continued to stay at a high rate of termination and they went up 2-0, winning the set 25-15.These Wardens didn't get to state taking the easy route. They would not give up, taking an early 8-6 lead in the third set.Deer Lodge would hold that edge, leading 17-14 more than midway through the set. Warden defenders continued to improve back in the back, including Sara Forbes who made some sensational pick up to keep rallies alive. Then a Lacie Thomas kill would put the Deer Lodge girls up 20-16 as a chance to stay alive crept closer.Forsyth answered with a 3-1 run before Walker shushed them with a roll-kill for a 22-19 advantage.A kill by Shayla Therriault then put Deer Lodge of the set win at 24-20.She then followed that up with a block at the net and Deer Lodge had cut the deficit to 2-1 with a 25-21 set win. Both teams swung away to start the fourth set and the Dogies led 8-6 early. Some big serves and timely touches helped Deer Lodge terminate play or keep balls alive. They would take advantage to go up 10-9.The teams would battle back and forth for the next 15 or so points as Forsyth would go up 18-17.A few hitting errors didn't help the Warden cause and Deer Lodge trailed 22-18.Despite some scrappy play in hopes of extending the Dogies to five, Deer Lodge could keep Forsyth from booting them down into the losers bracket in a 25-23 Forsyth set win and 3-1 match victory."We dropped the first couple of sets and got out at them in the first one, but in the second one we got out of our system and started tipping, thinking that would work at this level before realizing that wouldn't fly," Deer Lodge head coach Jason Jones said. "We got back into our game and started swinging away and made a run at it. We deserve to be here and tonight we played like we did.Walker led Deer Lodge with 10 kills, while Shayla Therriault and Natalie Padovich chipped in with seven kills apiece.Forsyth was able to out terminate Deer Lodge 66-35, thanks in part to a better variety of kill placement."That was a big part of it and the reason why they could do that to us is because they are big," Jones said. "We are a short team. So with a short team you have to deal with what the set tells you to do. They had some big hitters and put the ball away. We did play with them."Forsyth def. "We worked hard and coming out strong surprising everyone. Sometimes we forget to move our feet and are a little slow at times. (Florence-Carlton) have the experience and have been playing a long time together."They then went toe-to-toe in the second set and the Panthers had the early lead as they forced F-C to play big girls ball. The Falcons would respond to the challenge and slowly pulled away behind smart hitting and some strong back line sweeps to pull away for a 25-16 win.Thinking that a 2-0 lead was safe, the Falcons were challenged once again as Massey, Kerri Huso and Mallory Herzog provided a big wall up front and plenty of firepower to keep things interesting.Another solid start put Boulder up 9-8 and this time they wouldn't relent leading 21-18 late in the third.Their intense play didn't falter. They had set point at 24-21, before the Falcons' experience and pedigree shone through as they scored the final five points to deny Boulder a chance of lengthening the match."We thought we played pretty well. We just didn't adjust well to their change of pace play," Boulder head coach Mike Majors said. "They went from aggressive hitters to being change-up hitters and that's good coaching. They made a lot less errors when the match was on the line. They stopped shooting themselves in the foot and we just couldn't finish. Good teams like Florence, good experience, good skills, find a way to get it done. Those kids have been here, we haven't."Huso finished with 12 kills while Herzog was credited with 14 blocks and Janessa Williams added nine blocks.Florence-Carlton def.
