Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch, Va.儲存倉Sept. 23--This week, Street Beat looks at missing streetlights, studies road alligators and notes a couple of places where road conditions have improved.Prior to the construction of the new Huguenot Bridge, there were two Dominion street lights on Riverside Drive on both the east and west side of the bridge. These lights illuminated the on/off ramps to the bridge from Riverside Drive. Now that the bridge has been completed, the lights have not been reinstalled and the area around and under the bridge is in complete darkness. Also, there were lights at the south end of the bridge that gave northbound vehicles on Huguenot Road a clear view of cars entering the bridge from Riverside Drive. Southbound traffic would also benefit from illumination at the south end of the bridge at the exit to Riverside Drive. Is there a plan to have all or some of the lights reinstalled? It should also be noted that there have been some horrific crimes within several (hundred) feet of the bridge along Riverside Drive, and lighting may offer a deterrent.Bill Beville, RichmondThis one's pretty complicated, and we've only gotten it about half unraveled. Here's what we've found so far.We started with the Virginia Department of Transportation, since it's their bridge.VDOT told us that the poles in question belonged to the city, which removed them before construction. Any new lighting would have to be maintained by the city, wrote VDOT spokeswoman Lindsay LeGrand. So we followed up with the city. City officials met us at the bridge this past week to look at the situation, and we showed them exactly where the poles used to be. (Some of Google Maps' Streetview photographs haven't updated since before construction, so we had a pretty good idea where they had been.)Incidentally, there isn't lighting on the bridge, either, and that's deliberate. VDOT told us that many residents worried lighting along the bridge would be distracting at night. That said, VDOT built the bridge in such a way that lighting could be added later, if it's needed.--We'd heard that VDOT had a cool new device for removing tire treads from our state'迷你倉 highways. We asked department spokeswoman Dawn Eischen if VDOT had such a gizmo."Yes," she replied, "our hands."There are devices specially made for the task, which scoop the treads up and deposit them into a storage bin above the truck's hood, she wrote in an email, but VDOT doesn't use them. She also told me that, within VDOT, these treads are referred to as "road alligators." The main danger they pose is that motorists tend to swerve to avoid them. A tread could also harm a vehicle that hit it. And they're especially hazardous for motorcycle riders.Around Richmond, they're mostly moved from travel lanes by the Virginia State Police, then picked up from the shoulder by VDOT maintenance staff. From there they're separated into their own dumpster before heading to the landfill.--We updated you a couple of weeks ago about a promised sign at the intersection of Forest Hill Avenue and Old Westham and Hathaway roads.City workers have now installed the sign, which notifies motorists of the divided lanes, making it easier to figure out where drivers turning off of Forest Hill Avenue should go.--We also wanted to mention that VDOT has significantly smoothed the "asphalt speed bump" on the ramp leading from Interstate 195 westbound to the Powhite Parkway. Thank you.--This weekend will be the third and final weekend of bridge work at the Lombardy Street bridge on Interstate 95. Expect traffic snarls from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.--Starting today, there will be lane closures on Byrd Street between 10th and 11th streets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.The lane closures, which will be intermittent, will allow workers to install traffic control devices. Work runs through Oct. 11.--There will be a lane closure at Sheppard Street and Stuart Avenue through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as workers install a crosswalk. If you have a transportation-related question, email it to streetbeat@timesdispatch.com.
