Macabre Addams Family tests musical tastes
By Xu Jingxi in Guangzhou ( China Daily) The theme is more warm than creepy, but The Addams Family tries to attract fans of the old series with its visual effects.自存倉 Carol Rosegg / For China Daily The Broadway adaptation of American cartoonist Charles Addams' black comedy The Addams Family made its debut in China with its original English version on Aug 13, testing the waters for the young musical after the success of classics, such as Cats and Mamma Mia!The Addams family is a group of creepy characters in the cartoonist's one-panel gags serialized in the weekly magazine The New Yorker from 1938 until Addams' 1988 death.Grandma is madly keen on making poison. Mother grows a piranha plant as her pet. Father is intoxicated by a "beautiful" painting of tombs. The daughter's hobby is studying death, while the son loves being tortured by his sister. And the uncle giggles when everyone else in the cinema is weeping over a sad movie.Eccentric as they are, the Addamses quickly won Americans' hearts. The Addams Family has been adapted to TV series, both live and animated, since the 1960s.After a tryout in Chicago in 2009, the musical version opened on Broadway in April 2010 and saw $15 million advance ticket sales the following weekend, a huge figure for a new Broadway show. It had more than 750 runs with a weekly revenue of $1 million until it closed at the end of 2011.Then it went on tour, visiting Asia for the first time this summer.Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the musical's playwrights, say the charm of the Addams family lies in their straightforwardness and ease with being different from others."They have no subtext. Whatever they think, they say. Whatever they want to do, they act out. They are enviable. What they do is what we want to do, but we can't because of all kinds of restrictions," Brickman says.People can also identify with the cartoon's family perspective, which is the focus of the stage adaptation. The New Yorker has criticized the musical's story for staying safely on the outside of Addams' comic world and has picked "the weakest one of all the dark cards in Addams' hand", which is "love".However, choosing the cliche yet universal theme h迷你倉新蒲崗s helped the Broadway production to cross cultural borders. It has recently launched international productions in Brazil, Sweden, Australia, Argentina, Finland and Peru with cast of local performers.Despite the warm, loving theme, the musical compensates fans who go for the spooky side of The Addams Family with its visual effect.According to Mark Minnick of the casting staff, what sets it from any other musical is the unusual ensemble made of the Addams family's ancestors who come up from graves. Pale skin, messy hair and rotten clothes make these ghosts a bit scary. It's also interesting to see how Andrew Lippa, the music and lyrics writer, brings the characters from paper to life. His Addams Family work won him a 2010 Tony Award nomination for the best original score. The fantasy musical has great potential to become a box-office hit on its Asian tour, drawing big audiences for 24 shows in Singapore. But Chinese audiences are much more cautious about trying something new.Broadway Asia International, the production company for The Addams Family's Asian tour, approached theaters in Beijing and Shanghai but they all turned it down because of cost and box-office concerns.Only Guangzhou Opera House on the Chinese mainland was bold enough to take the project. After shows there, the production moves on to Macao. The cool reception shows that the musical market in China is still not mature, according to Xu Minqi, art director of the opera house."Chinese theaters can't feed the audience with only classics that are two or three decades old all the time. The market needs a variety of shows," Xu says."We were prepared to lose money before we accepted the project. The market needs cultivation. I hope The Addams Family and more good, less-known musicals and other arts can get a good start in Guangzhou and attract the country's attention." Marc Routh, president of Broadway Asia International, says, "The musical is a new art form for China. The market is growing. If The Addams Family succeeds in China, it will prove that the Chinese audiences truly accept the concept of Broadway. Then we can expect China to produce more musicals of its own." xujingxi@chinadaily.com.cn迷你倉出租

Customs: Touch screen kiosks speed up process for arriving travelers at O'Hare
Source: Chicago TribuneAug.文件倉 15--The use of touch screen kiosks has helped dramatically to speed up long lines of arriving travelers queued up for passport-control processing at O'Hare International Airport, customs and city officials said Thursday.Average wait times during busy periods have fallen to 34 minutes from 50 minutes since 32 self-service kiosks were installed last month, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. The kiosks, which are replacing paper declaration forms for U.S. citizens only, currently, are freeing U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers from administrative duties so they can focus on questioning passengers and inspecting items that are being brought into the U.S., officials said."The new technology is exceeding everybody's expectations," Chicago Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the airport. The number of passengers waiting more than an hour have been reduced 58 percent since the kiosks were deployed in July in O'Hare's international terminal customs facilities, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.United Airlines has reported a 31 percent reduction in passengers who missed their flight connections because of backups in the custom hall.An increase in international travel has fueled long lines -- and waits that can extend for several hours -- this summer in airport customs halls at major U.S. airports.Exorbitant wait times have occurred at O'Hare, Los Angeles International, Kennedy International in New York, Dallas-Ft. Worth International, Miami International and other major hubs, according to the airlines and groups representing business travelers.Hours-long waits have frustrated travelers who h存倉ve already been sitting on planes for up to 17 hours on some long-haul flights from Asia. Many travelers complained they have missed connections because of under-staffed customs facilities.O'Hare is so far the only U.S airport to use the automated passport control kiosks, said Kevin McAleenan, acting deputy commissioner of U.S. Custom and Border Protection. After deplaning, passengers using the kiosk, instead of a paper declaration form, to answer questions on the touch-screen computer. A receipt is issued and the passengers give their passport to a customs officer for verification. At O'Hare Thursday morning during a peak period of airliners coming in from Asian countries, U.S. passport-holders were processed by the kiosks in less than 15 minutes, while the line of foreign citizens entering the U.S. at the airport snaked around the customs hall and passengers encountered extensive delays.Critics say the Customs agency needs more funding to expand the kiosks to other U.S. airports and to beef up staffing of officers."Customs has to do a better job relieving endless wait times for millions of people," said Joseph Sitt, chairman of the Global Gateway Alliance, a group that advocates for improvements in air transportation in the New York-New Jersey area."We think New York should be first for solutions because of our impact on the rest of the country, but the bottom line is the agency needs a full-court press at all our major airports to improve quality of life, business efficiency, and the U.S. brand," Sitt said.Jhilkevitch@tribune.comTwitter @jhilkevitchCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Chicago Tribune Visit the Chicago Tribune at .chicagotribune.com Distributed by MCT Information Services自存倉

Pipes and fittings business lifts San Teh Q2 profit
SAN Teh's second-quarter net profit grew 67 per cent to $0.新蒲崗迷你倉98 million from $0.58 million a year ago, thanks to improved performance from its PVC pipes and fittings business. This came as revenue close to doubled, rising 92 per cent to $13.7 million from $7.1 million a year ago. The improved performance came from its hotel and property arm for the three months ended June 30. This was due specifically to the contribution of its build-and-transfer project at Anxi, China. However, San Teh's hotel and property operation still made a loss of $0.6 million due to higher operating losses from its two hotels. But its PVC pipes and fittings arm improved profitability, by securing more projects to supply pipes and fittings and thus delivering higher sales volumes and selling prices. Operating profit for thmini storaget segment thus rose from $0.1 million to $0.5 million in the second quarter. San Teh also benefited from foreign exchange gains, thanks to the strengthening of the US dollar against the Singapore dollar. Earnings per share for the period rose to 0.28 cent from 0.17 cent a year ago. The group's net asset value per ordinary share was $0.63 as at June 30, unchanged from what it was at last Dec 31. The group said its property projects in Shanghai Anting, Fujian Anxi and Dali Heqing are progressing according to plan. But its third-quarter outlook is not too rosy. The operating environment for hotel operations is likely to remain challenging, while its PVC pipes and fittings operation is also expected to face rising cost pressures, the group said. San Teh's shares last traded for 31 cents on Wednesday.self storage

Banning costly galas a wise move
WHEN I watched Celine Dion sing her most popular song, “My Heart Will Go On,” at this year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala, I recalled her best early days when many young’s hearts were broken with her 1998 hit “Titanic.儲存”But I was astonished to learn that she might receive a huge sum of money in China for her several-minute presence, which the TV managers refused to disclose, citing “commercial secrets.”Gone are the golden days when galas were celebrities’ gold mines — a ban on luxury galas was issued on Tuesday by China’s publication and finance authorities. The ban is a clear answer to the people’s long-standing complaints about such shallow, money-consuming visual feasts.China is widely believed to be the country that has the most gala shows. During this Spring Festival, there were at least 20 local TV galas in addition to the major CCTV gala, and each looked as though it had cost millions of yuan. And more have mushroomed across the nation in recent years in the name of all kinds of festivals, anniversaries, and opening ceremonies. Some argue that most galas are commercial activities sponsored by enterprises, so there is no blame, no matter how much they cost.Such self-justification is nonsense. Enterprises do have the right to decide how to spend for profits or publicity, but they also have responsibilities to society. Only tho新蒲崗迷你倉e who establish images of honesty and responsibility will gain consumers’ trust. Please don’t forget that in China there are still 128 million people living under the poverty line on 6.3 yuan a day.At the beginning of this year, a developer in Fuping County in Shaanxi Province — who owed migrant workers back wages of around 49 million yuan — was exposed to have invited Hong Kong star Cecilia Cheung to show up for eight minutes at an opening ceremony. Her pay: 1.3 million yuan.Furthermore, the gala shows with “silver and gold plating” is anti-green, because they need millions of yuan for stage properties, costumes, lights and LEDs that are ususally used only once. Such a big waste of resources is to be condemned when environmental protection is urgent in China. What’s worse, public funds can be traced to luxury shows, even in some poor areas. In May 2012, Fuyuan County of Yunnan Province, one of China’s poorest counties, spent millions of yuan to invite stars to a culture festival. In 2011, Yunxi County in Hubei Province, another poor area, spent millions of yuan to invite TV anchors, singers and actors to promote a tourism festival. The luxury galas create a bigger economic burden than development opportunities. The ban is a timely warning about what helps and what doesn’t.The author is an independent writer. The opinion expressed is his own. mini storage
